What We Look For In a LED Gel Nail Lamp

When reviewing LED Gel nail lamps, we look at the following criteria and rate is model accordingly.

The design criteria covers a number of considerations. The main ones being the look of the lamp, the construction (what its made of, how well it is put together) and if there are any obvious design flaws.

This one pretty much explains itself, but it doesn’t mean that bigger or smaller is necessary better. It focus’ on if the lamp is the right size for its purpose. For example, a lamp that is marketed as being portable should be small, while a lamp that is designed to be placed on a table and left there in a salon can be quite large.

The functionality of a lamp whether it does what its meant to do, how well it does it and how easy it makes it. This could cover many things – some examples are: power cord length, timer functionality, LED placement etc.

Once again, a fairly self explanatory criteria. But lower price doesnt mean better, it is more of an indication of the LED gel nail lamps value for money. We know that you will pay much more for a professional quality salon lamp, so that is taken into consideration when scoring this criteria.

Please note: Not all gel polishes will cure in all LED nail lamps. While we list what polishes we have tested with these lamps that work, you should double check that the polish you want to use works with whichever lamp you intend to buy.

Gelish 18G Review

If you are looking for a serious salon quality LED gel nail lamp, then you should seriously be considering the Gelish 18G Professional LED Nail Lamp.

This lamp would be at home in any salon, and if you really want to impress people – it would look great in your home too!

Made of high quality materials, the Gelish 18G is designed to stand the test of time. It is not going to break easily, and can take a beating from your staff.

It is advertised as being Acetone “resistant”, which basically means if you accidentally spill some acetone on it – its not going to melt in front of your eyes. I would still recommend cleaning it off quickly though.

If the time it takes to do your nails annoys you, then you should know that the Gelish 18G LED Nail lamp is fast. It cures Gelish Foundation gel in 5 seconds, and Gelish Soak off Gel Polish in 20-30 seconds. Now it does depend on the brand of polish you are using, So you will have to do some testing with whatever your favorite polish is, but the fact that this unit has a 5 second timer setting says something about its speed!

Don’t expect to pick this lamp up and cart it around with you a lot, as this is a big unit. It is designed to easily fit 5 fingers or 5 toes in without needing to worry about space at all.

As you would expect from a LED nail lamp of this price, it also features a slide down plastic shield to limit your exposure to the UV light and a sensor to automatically turn the LED’s on and off when your hand is in or out of the unit.

The 18G nail lamp also has a magnetically attached removable base to allow for easy cleaning and of course, it gives you the ability to give yourself the perfect pedicure.

The Gelish 18G LED Nail Lamp is such a good piece of equipment, its hard to find anything bad to write about it. If we had to pick something, it would be that it can be a bit annoying that it doesn’t have an off/off switch on the lamp itself. This means that if you want it power it down fully, you need to switch it off at the outlet.

There have also been a few (like barely any) reports of the sensor going faulty after 6-12 months use in some occasions.

MelodySusie Violeta Pro60W Review

The MelodySusie Violeta Pro60W smart led lamp is a very interesting piece of equipment. It uses what it calls “smart bulbs” that combine both LED and UV globes into one package. What this does, is allows the lamp to cure almost any gel polish on the market.

This lamp is very easy to use, it includes an automatic sensor that turns the light when the hand is placed inside. This is a great feature, but possibly not implemented in the best way. It is a touch based sensor, so if your client (or yourself) doesn’t touch the right part of the inside of the lamp, it doesn’t activate. This is more frustrating than anything, and as long as you tell your client to make sure they place their hand in the correct location it wont be a problem.

Unlike most other professional lamps, this one is bottomless. This makes it super easy to do a pedicure and also makes cleaning the MelodySusie Violeta Pro60W a breeze. It also has 2 stands under the front walls that fold down and lift the front of the lamp up. This ensures that if your clients have larger hands or feet, there will always be room.

A built in handle at the top makes moving this lamp around very easy. It is also made of molded ABS and is very tough, I have a feeling this led nail lamp could take a beating.

On top of the MelodySusie Violeta Pro60W  LED lamp is a visual countdown timer. It certainly looks good and will likely impress your clients, but I question the need for it – especially since it is facing the back of the lamp. So it would be upside down to the client, or the DIY user.

We did notice that occasionally thumbs would not sure correctly if they were a bit out of position, so its important to keep an eye on that.

The other issue we had with this lamp is the timer function buttons on the top are very sensitive and easily bumped. So you may find that clients accidentally change your timer settings on you.

What We Liked

  • Sensor automatically turns LED light on and off
  • Bottomless design allows for pedicure as well
  • Sturdy design and strong materials
  • Built in handle
  • Visual count down timer
  • Built in stand at front to lift front of lamp up

What We Didn’t Like

  • Occasionally thumbs will not cure correctly
  • Buttons on top are over sensitive – easily bumped
  • Time is upside down if doing your own nails
  • Auto sensor doesn’t work if hand is not far enough in

USpicy 48W LED Nail Lamp Review

Wow…. what can you say about the USpicy 48W LED Lamp other than that!

This lamp is worth getting excited over. For a little over $50 (when you find the best price) you can have an almost salon quality LED lamp, that cures just about any gel polish currently on the market.

The features that this LED lamp comes with is awesome. Lets start with the plug in USB light. Thats right….this lamp has a USB port. No, you cant plug in your phone and play your fav tunes through it, but you can plug in the USB powered light that is included with this lamp. This light is on a flexible stem that you can maneuver you shine light on your hands while you are applying the polish. You will nenver complain about working in the dark again!

There is also the removable soft rubber pad on the top of the unit. This pad is designed to rest your hands (directly under the USB light) so that you have a comfortable, well lit area as your work space.

On the inside of the USpicy 48W LED Nail Lamp, are even more features. There are two types of curing lights in this unit: 15 LED’s around the top and the sides of the lamp, and a UV tube at the top of the lamp. The reason behind the UV tube, is that it cures even more types of gel polish. LED only lamps do not cure all types of gel polish, but you wont have that problem with this lamp. The positioning of the LED’s around the side as well as the top means that you will get a nice even cure across all your nails, even your thumbs.

When you put your hand into the lamp, it senses that your hand is there and automatically turns on the LED and UV lights. These lights will stay on for the pre-set amount of time you have chosen and then turn off. It will also turn off automatically if you remove your hand.

As a safety feature, the USpicy 48W LED Lamp also has a sliding cover that you can pull down when your hand is in the lamp. This prevents most UV light from escaping and protects the rest of your hand and your eyes.

A built in fan helps keeps your hands cool while curing, as well as stops any dangerous build up of fumes from the gel polish being built up in the lamp enclosure.

And on top of all that, the base of the lamp is removable. This allows for easy cleaning of the unit, but more importantly, allows you to fit your foot in for curing your gel pedicure!

Really, there is not much that is wrong with the USpicy 48W LED Nail lamp. We have had reports of the USB port not working for some people, and other reports that the sensor hasn’t worked. But these are few and far between.

  • Sliding cover to pull down when curing to protect your eyes

  • Cover comes off to allow you to use it for pedicures as well

MelodySusie 12W LED Nail Lamp Review

The MelodySusie 12 W LED Nail lamp is certainly a stylish looking beast, if you don’t like the older style square UV lamps, then you might find this one more attractive. It has a modern round design that looks great, but doesn’t stand out too much in any room.

The construction of the nail lamp is of high quality and it feels incredibly strong. I have a feeling that it could survive quite a rough drop or bump, although we didn’t test that ourselves (no need to go throwing a perfectly good LED nail lamp around!).

While the MelodySusie 12 LED Nail lamp is quite small, it is still advertised as being a whole hand lamp – meaning that it is meant to be able to fit all 5 of your fingers in at once. While this is technically the case, we found that unless you have quite small hands – it is quite cramped to get all fingers in at once.

One thing that should also be considered is the placement of the LED’s in this lamp. They are only along the top and while it does have a reflective bottom, you may find that thumbs will not cure correctly if placing your whole hand in. It is often prudent in LED lamps such as this to cure your thumbs separately, even though they are capable of fitting your whole hand in.

The other complaints we have about this lamp are not big problems, but they should be mentioned. The packaging and user manual are written in English that is far below par. While we could understand what it said, it is not a great look.

We were also quote frustrated with the short power cord that came on this unit, it was only about 3 foot in length which didnt reach any of our power outlets without an extension lead.

The value for money of this unit is almost too good to be true. A LED nail lamp for under $40.00 (if you buy from the right spot) would usually set off alarm bells in your head. But from our experience,  there is no need to worry with this lamp.

What We Liked

  • Fits your whole hand in
  • Great value for money
  • Very durable case
  • Looks great!

What We Didn’t Like

  • Poorly worded English on package and in user manual
  • Power cord is quite short
  • Top mounted LED’s only can mean un-even curing of the polish on your thumbs
  • It fits your whole hand in, but it is quite cramped unless you have small hands

Kedsum 12W LED Nail Lamp Review

I am always a little wary when I come across gel nail equipment from a relatively unknown company. Before I found this lamp, I had never heard of Kedsum. But to my surprise, the lamp is actually pretty good for its price!

For under $20 (when you shop around), the Kedsum 12W LED Nail Lamp is a great little unit. Of course it doesn’t have all the features that some of the more expensive nail lamps have, but it does do some nifty things at such a great price.

The auto sensor turns on the LED’s automatically when your hand enters the unit, and turns it off when your hand is removed. There is nothing worse than trying to find the on button when you cant really use both hands.

It is advertised as fitting your whole hand in, but I do need to mention that this is not really the case. If you really squish your hand up, then you can indeed fit all 5 fingers in…..but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you want hand cramps and nails that are not cured correctly.

The construction of this lamp also feels a bit flimsy, but I guess it is what is to be expected at this price point

What We Liked

  • Great value for the price
  • Perfect for the casual DIY gel nail user

  • Feels a bit flimsy
